Positive Embodiment: Applying Niva Piran’s Developmental Theory of Embodiment to Clinical Practice

Through lectures and writing practices, participants in this online (self-paced course) will be introduced to Niva Piran’s Developmental Theory of Embodiment. You will explore the social risk factors Piran’s research identified that can lead to the development of disrupted embodiment. You will learn the protective factors that can be implemented in clinical practice to support the client’s positive embodiment and to promote resilience against eating disorders and other forms of disrupted embodiment such as substance use disorder and self-harm.

The Learning Objectives for this course include:

  1. Analyze the difference between “Inhabiting the body as a subject vs. inhabiting the body as an object” in your own body journey.
  2. Identify three protective social factors that contribute to positive embodiment, according to Niva Piran.
  3. Summarize Niva Piran’s dimension of “Attuned Self-Care vs. Disrupted Attunement, Self-harm, Neglect”.
  4. Explain how increased social agency supports positive embodiment.
  5. Differentiate between the experience and expression of desire and disrupted connection to desire.
  6. Discuss how attuned self-care is linked to positive embodiment.
